Embarking on a DPhil is far from a linear path—especially when it comes to writing. To support DPhil researchers (and postdoc ECRs) through one of the most challenging parts of the journey, the ZERO Institute’s ECR Network is hosting a DPhil Writing Retreat. The retreat combines focused writing time with expert-led workshops on academic writing and presentation skills, aiming to create a distraction-free environment where participants have the space, structure and support to progress with their work.

Participation is free of charge. Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided!

Dates: Tuesday 21st – Thursday 23rd April 2026, 10-5PM
Location: Holywell House, Osney Mead, Oxford OX2 0ES
Trainers: Eleanor Pritchard, Dr Sam (Li) Shen, Dr Marina Topouzi & Dr Hannah Budnitz and Nethmi Jayaratne Kariyawasam and team.

Details:

Day 1

Facilitated writing time, networking and two expert-led sessions from Eleanor Pritchard on doctoral writing and skill building.

Day 2

Facilitated writing time, networking and an expert-led workshop on poster skills:

– This workshop will help researchers transform complex energy transition research into clear, visually compelling academic posters. Participants will refine their core message, redesign key sections, and practise delivering a confident 60-second pitch with live feedback.

Day 3

Facilitated writing time, networking and two expert-led sessions:

– From Chapter to Journal Article: A practical session on transforming thesis chapters into publishable journal articles, focusing on contribution clarity, abstract writing, and strategic journal positioning.

– Writing for Impact Beyond Academia: A focused session on translating doctoral research into language that resonates with policymakers, funders and industry stakeholders while preserving analytical depth.

Who is this for? The programme is mainly aimed at DPhil students, who have priority. Postdoc Early Career Researchers can also be considered.

Eligibility criteria: You may be on your graduate studies in any discipline (or postdoc ECR), and your research should have a link to energy transition or related issues.

Deadline for registration: Monday 15th April.
