Stephanie Hirmer

Department for Engineering Science
Associate Professor in Climate Compatible Growth

Stephanie Hirmer is an Associate Professor in Just Energy Systems in the Energy and Power Group within the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. She currently serves as the Research Chair for the £98M FCDO-funded Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme and the Strategic Hydrogen Integration for Effective Low-carbon Development (SHIELD) in Ukraine project. She brings nearly 20 years of experience in equitable energy access, spanning both academia and professional practice.

Her research focuses on integrating community perspectives into energy decision-making to promote more inclusive, equitable, and context-specific outcomes. Together with her team, she explores how high-income opportunities — such as green hydrogen, solar-powered irrigation, and copper mining — can act as levers for broader development while actively addressing neo-colonial dynamics in the energy transition.
