Oxford Hosts Oxford Berlin Research Partnership  for Week of Energy and Innovation Dialogue

This week, the University of Oxford welcomed colleagues from the Oxford Berlin Research Partnerships. The ZERO Institute was engaged in a range of  high-level engagements focused on innovation and the energy transition. The week commenced with roundtable discussions on Technology Transfer and Innovation hosted by Dr Henry MarxState Secretary for Science and Research, Berlin Senate Department for Higher Education and Research, bringing together researchers and policy experts from both cities.

On 2nd October, a panel discussion chaired by Her Excellency Susanne Baumann, German Ambassador to the United Kingdom, explored shared ambitions for decarbonisation and energy transition. Ambassador Baumann highlighted the importance of international collaboration, with mutual goals of Prosperity, Growth and Innovation, especially in light of the recently announced Kensington Treaty.

The panel featured leading academics including Professors Paul Shearing and Ludmilla Steier (Oxford), Professor Jenny Nelson (Imperial), and Professors Neubauer and Herkendell (TU Berlin). Professor Paul Shearing, Director of the ZERO Institute, commented: “International collaboration is essential to accelerate the energy transition. The Oxford Berlin Research Partnership exemplifies how together we can unlock innovation, share expertise, and drive real-world impact. As we face the urgent challenge of decarbonisation, working together across borders is not just beneficial—it’s imperative.”

The Oxford Berlin Research Partnership, established in 2017, is a strategic partnership between Oxford and the Berlin University Alliance. It supports interdisciplinary research across borders, fostering collaboration on global challenges from democratic resilience to sustainable energy systems.
